It’s summer! The sun is shining, the days are longer, the schedule is freer. If you’re like me, you’re going into this summer excited for all the things you have been wanting to do all year but haven’t had the time to do. The thing is… as soon as I had time I couldn’t remember a single thing I had wanted to do. So here a few things you can fill your time with this summer so that you can enjoy these months to their fullest!
- Make a list of all the goals you have. Accomplish them one by one.
- Pick up a book or two and really soak in the story.
- Grab a friend and catch that movie that you been watching the trailers for on YouTube.
- Reunite with friends you haven’t seen in a while.
- Start a new hobby or pick up an old one.
- Do nothing for a day.
- Seriously do nothing for a day.
- Start a bible study or book club with friends.
- Write. Something. Anything.
- Spend a day bettering yourself in some way: physically, mentally, or spiritually.
I am labeling this summer as the summer of you! If you have the time and ability to shake things up in your life and do what you’ve always wanted to do, then do it! This past year in my AP Language Class we read “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. While the 20’s were known for their romanticized culture they had their bumps in the road too. At the end of Great Gatsby Fitzgerald says this, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms further . . . And one fine morning— So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
This quote is complex and while many people have interpreted it many ways, I see it this way. Each day that we do not accomplish the dreams we have in our hearts we convince ourselves that the next chance we get we will achieve everything we hope to. This is the American dream. However when the quote abruptly cuts off with “and one find morning” we are reminded that our lives here on earth must come to end and no matter how much we believe we have an endless amount of time to reach our dreams, one day we will realize we are to late.
This is why I am encouraging you to make this the summer of you. Whatever it is that you want to do, go get it! We do not live in a world that is conducive to success, very few actually achieve that American dream. The ones who do however are the ones who are crazy enough to believe they can be successful. So go on! Make this the summer of you! Beat your boat against the current because just like the words of Steve Jobs, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”
You’ve got this.
